Commitment really is one of those things that can be completely lost on us unless we’re ready for it. And there is a curious irony to when this occurs, exactly. Because the times when we are curled up under the duvet feeling
(a) Rubbish day at work
(b) Painfully yawn-inducing date
(c) Or disastrous shopping trip
are the times when we most feel like we need someone else. We need someone else to make us feel loved. We need someone else to make us feel valid. We need someone else to make us feel confident. We need the validation of a significant other to prove that we aren’t all the things our self-esteem is telling us we ate. But RELATIONSHIPS SHOULDN’T BE ABOUT NEED. In fact, on the contrary, the healthiest time to enter into a commitment with someone else is when you don’t “need” to do it at all. When you’re hapoy with yourself. When you feel content and complete. When a relationship is going to be the cherry on top of the ice bun, not part of your staple diet.
Until next time,
